About Me:

Working Together

My work draws from the latest learning science and other social sciences. I offer evidence-based recommendations whenever possible.

My process begins by helping you identify your true business objectives. If needed, we’ll diagnose the root causes of any issues at play to ensure that training is the right solution. I’ll analyze the organization, audience, contexts, constraints, and tasks/behaviors. We’ll sketch out some ideas for measurable learning outcomes. Then, I’ll provide you with several unbiased options for solutions, including the advantages and disadvantages of each. It’s easy to fully elucidate and delineate your objectives if we have concrete ideas to discuss. Next, I’ll craft the learning objectives to support our agreed upon learning outcomes, and we’ll determine how success will be measured.

Based on the scope of your project, we’ll decide whether an iterative, rapid prototype approach or a linear storyboard process is more appropriate for the design and development of course components. I’ll create a detailed project plan, including review dates and deliverable due dates. Decisions, risks, issues, and status updates will also be captured here, providing maximum visibility to all stakeholders. The scope of the project is carefully defined to prevent undue scope creep. I plan for a small amount of creep on every project, because it’s impossible to identify all content-related details up front. This contingency planning also helps absorb unexpected shifts in the business.

A reserve budget should be in place to iterate all projects after 30-60 days of deployment, so that business data can influence the final product. This will ensure the long-term effectiveness of the solution and result in the best possible ROI. A well-designed learning experience can have a long shelf life, in some cases lasting 3-5 years. It’s worth doing it right.
